15 Reasons Kids NEED to learn a Second Language (Part 1)

November 8, 2017

This is the beginning of a three part series as to why your child should learn a secondary language!

1. It Grows Your Child's Brain

Studies show learning a secondary language increases the grey matter in our brain! This helps kids become smarter, more sensible and focused. Even brain scans reveal a greater density of grey matter in areas of the brain associated with language processing and executive functions. (Mechelli A., et al. Nature. Oct. 14,(2004).

Many researchers believe the best way to have a smarter kid is to expose them to multiple languages when they are young!

2.It increases language ability

It’s a common misconception learning a secondary language can confuse your child and cause them to fall behind in their native language.

Research shows children who study a foreign language perform better in their native language than monolingual students. Additionally, bilingual children were found to be better at identifying grammatically incorrect sentences than monolingual children. For this reason, teaching kids a secondary language helps prepare them for school!

3. It Boosts Their Empathy

Language represents culture. When your child learns multiple languages they learn to place themselves in other people’s shoes. This helps kids become more empathetic towards others!

“Children in multilingual environments have social experiences that provide routine practice in considering the perspectives of others: they have to think about who speaks which language to whom, who understands which content, and the times and place in which different languages are spoken.” -Dr Katherine Kinzler

4. More Career Opportunities

Many industries require employees to be multilingual. The demand for multilingual candidates is increasing as companies explore opportunities in international markets and become more global. Knowing a secondary language can increase job options, and help your kids land thier dream career!

5. It's Fun!

The joy that comes from being able to speak to another in their native language is unparalleled. It provides your kids with a sense of accomplishment. You can be proud knowing you set your kids up for success, simply by teaching them a secondary language!
